Picking Up Cues

“Um, Erica?”

Erica double-checked the name on her screen. The call said Brandon, but the voice—although male—was unfamiliar.

“Yes?” she said uncertainly.

“This is Alec, Brandon’s brother. My brother’s out cold right now, but he has said your name more than once, so I figure you’re someone he would call if he could.”

Erica’s heart sped up. “What are you talking about?” she asked.

“My brother’s out from pain meds. He had an incident off Tasmania. Great white attack.”

“Wait, what?”

“We’re in Australia. If you know my brother, you know why he was here. The shark took a bite out of his board and managed to clamp down on his leg. He got lucky, I guess, since he’s still here. Anyway, just thought I’d let you know in case you were expecting to hear from him or anything.”

Erica stared at the phone, her mouth wide open long after Alec hung up. She didn’t know how long she sat there, feeling stuck between a dream and a nightmare.

That call couldn’t have been real, could it? She nearly lost Brandon, just like that?

And what was she supposed to do now—just wait until he got back to California? When was that supposed to be? How badly was he hurt? Did he still have all of his limbs? Was he completely out of the woods?

“Erica Cain, you’re up,” the casting assistant suddenly said.

Erica knew there was no way she could do her audition now and wished she hadn’t forgotten to turn off her phone. Then again, she would have missed such a hugely important call.

She was about to leave but remembered that the scene she’d been about to read for was an emotional one.

She was in exactly the right place to hit this audition out of the park.

The only problem was, once she started crying, whether or not she’d be able to stop.
